Just a Taste- Broadway Cafe

After my sister's track meet last weekend, we decided to treat ourselves to some foot long hot dogs. That day Aashna had us craving hot dogs after speaking highly of them. I realized that the look of the menu has changed within the past six months or so. I took a quick gander but did not notice any new options. They have a good breakfast, burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and milk shakes.

I went with the Foot Long Super Dog, which has always seemed to be my favourite dish there. Usually I choose a hamburger over hot dogs but I love them here! It's a hot dog with bacon, relish, mustard, tomatoes and cooked onions. The meal comes with fries and cole slaw. In comparison to the fries I had at Aroma's, these were better. They were crispy and lightly salted, which is how I prefer my fries.

Felix Cartal - Don't Turn On The Lights feat. Polina

Felix Cartal has been getting a bunch of flack for his new direction in sound saying that he sold out. I think the direction is excellent, what's wrong with a pop sound? He's been doing what he wants and by definition that isn't "selling out".

His next single "Domo", yes that Domo, sounds to be a rip jam popper and it drops February 7, 2012.

How to Make Hawaiian Vodka

With the help of my cook book I can teach you how to make a fun Summer beverage. To prepare it you will need the following ingredients:

-Ice cubes
-Grenadine
-Pineapple juice (I substituted it with tropical juice)
-Lemon
-Orange
-Vodka

First I put about four ice cubes in a large glass. Then I drizzled two tea spoons of grenadine over the ice. In a separate measuring cup, I squeezed half a lemon and half an orange into it. After I poured tropical juice into the measuring cup until it measured one cup. I poured that into the glass with ice cubes and topped it off with a shot of vodka. Lastly I stirred it well and added a lemon slice for decoration.

It was a tasty drink. Its nice to sip on while socializing and I would imagine it would be nice to drink on a hot Summer's day. I made this drink without the vodka for my little sister and she enjoyed it a lot.

Complex's SH*T SNEAKERHEADS SAY

There has been a lot of "Sh*t (fill in the blank) Say" videos on YouTube lately. Majority that I have seen have also been hilarious. But these are things that I tend to hear a lot of, both in real life and on the Internet.

So we got our first entry for "nerdiest thing I own" and it's our homeboy Derek from Single Second.

Take it away.

I saw the post on
facebook about he nerdiest thing you own and I have a picture for you.
It's a deck of Dragon Ball Z playing cards. I got them from Tramp's in

Ransom "Resort Collection"

It has been quite some time since Ransom has done a clothing line. I learned about the company through Goodfoot years ago. It's one of Canada's most successful street wear companies in my opinion. You may have seen their more recent shoe line with Adidas. Currently their online website is down, but hopefully it will be running soon!

Just a Taste- Aroma's

For lunch I went to Aroma's, it's located inside of the Radisson Hotel. Rather than just having a lower priced lunch menu, it contains options that are not included on the regular menu. Aroma's prepares dishes such as salads, sandwiches, pizzas, ribs, seafood and steaks. They have specials on different nights of the week as well. For example, on Wednesday night their pizzas are half off their regular price. Every so often my co-workers and I stop by after a shift to grab a bite. This place tends to get quite busy because not only do their guests eat here but Saskatoon citizens as well.

I ordered the Double Club, it is the restaurant's take on a club house. The dish wasn't very big, but it was good. It contained fresh vegetables, turkey, bacon and chipotle aioli. It came with a side of fries (or soup or salad). They were similar to Las Palapas' but were much saltier.

If you are downtown give it a shot, and make sure to try their pizza on a Wednesday evening!

Nostalgia Moment: Metal Gear Solid 2

I recently picked up the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for Playstation 3 (also available on Xbox 360) from our local video game one-stop-shop Hi Tech Gametraders. Lucky break for me, Hi Tech had, what seemed to me, the last copy in the entire city.

I'm having a killer time going through MGS2 again. It's nice to play now that I'm older and can comprehend things better. When I first played MGS2 I was only 12, it was a fun game at the time, but I had no idea what the hell was going on. Even now, I'm learning more stuff about the MGS story than I ever did during my Nth play through. But damn can I still speed run through this game.

This fun pack comes loaded with HD re-releases of Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker which was originally released on the Playstation Portable.

If you wanna get technical, the Metal Gear Solid 2 game is the Substance version, which includes the MGS2 game and hours (I'm talking like 50+ hours) of extras, which ranges from challenges to non-canon stories all of which are a challenge and a boat load of fun.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is the Subsistence version, which includes MGS3 with the updated camera handling and Metal Gear 1 and 2, albeit it does not include the original Metal Gear Online, Snake Vs. Monkey game mode or Secret Theater mode.

For $40 some dollars it basically pays for itself.

Never has any set of games have such rich storyline and consistent gameplay which remain true to its nature but improve as the series progresses.

As for Metal Gear Solid 1, you can obtain that through the PSN network, unfortunately for Xbox 360 owners, you will have to find other means to play it, or you can read the Wikipedia article on it or something.

Although if you own a Gamecube or Wii, run out and get MGS: The Twin Snakes. It's MGS1 that plays like MGS2 and from personal experience, it's a bloody good game. Frankly it was the only game that I played on Gamecube.

So if you were ever interested in the MGS series, now is the time.

And just get it from Hi Tech Gametraders. Support local.

Just a Taste- Yip Hong's

I have done a post on Yip Hong's in the past based on their dim sum. They also have quite the selection for dinner if you choose sit down or to take out. One day last week after a long day at school I met my family for a Chinese meal. Regardless of your order, it begins with a complementary soup and Fortune Cookies. It is a place to share dishes rather than order individually. Many dishes are served without a side, this way you can come with family or friends and have just a taste of everything.

All of the dishes we ordered were fantastic. Yip Hong's makes the best ginger beef that I have eaten in the city. It has a nice amount of sauce while still remaining crisp. The gai lan is an essential for the family. For those who do not know, gai lan is a Chinese vegetable that is known as "Chinese broccoli". Other than that, we try to order different things each time. Be experimental and try something new!

Puma Power Cat 1.12 Commercial

Here is Puma's "Football Brings Japan Together" campaign commercial. It features Japan's Makato Hasebe (Wolfsburg) and the Power Cat 1.12. This is Puma's power boot which could be compared to the Adidas Predator line or Nike's Total 90 line. Puma is competing quite well with the company's new signings and new Power Cat model. The commercial resembles Nike's Joga Bonito campaign with Ronaldinho.

Just a Taste- Nha Trang

My father and I are still trying to eat at as many Vietnamese restaurants as we can within Saskatoon. The other day I went to try Nha Trang for a late lunch. It is located on 33rd Street close to the Safeway. The menu has quite the selection with about three specials a day. Because we went after the lunch rush, we did not have to wait long for our meals. I ordered the grilled pork salad rolls and a special vermicelli (meatball, shrimp, pork and a spring roll).

The salad rolls were really good, but I must warn you if you are allergic to peanuts. This is the only place I have been to so far that puts the nuts inside of the roll. It added a nice texture, but they put it inside without warning you (like most Asian restaurants). The sauce on the other hand was very thin, and I personally am not fond of it.

The vermicelli was very good as well. The portions were very generous and prices were fair. We were quite excited to see that they had the meatball as an option but have never had small ones like these. They were very chewy, almost like a rubber. I ate two and had to leave the other two in a separate dish, I hate wasting food but they were not enjoyable. I would eat here again but next time go with a different dish.

Essentials: Brent

Look at that, another essentials post cats and kittens.

This one is brought to you by Brent Frondall.

Take it away boss.

1. Samsung Galaxy S2: No idea why I bought this phone, I hate touch screens. (Sorry about the picture but I used my GoPro since my phone is my camera)

2. G-Shock Watch: I used to hate when people had these watches when I was a kid. Then I realized they are actually durable, maybe this watch will last? (Notice that the digital and analog times don't match, someone fix it for me)

3. Nixon Wallet: No idea why I chose this color. Every time I take it out of my pocket I feel like a little boy, need an upgrade. No point in opening it up since I never have money...

4. Keys: 1st thing most people notice is my walkie-talkie remote starter, its huge and doesn't like to come out of my pocket easily. That round grey fob is for my Chiropractor, its pretty nifty.

5. 32GB iPod w/ Skull Candy headphones: This is actually my moms iPod...mine broke. Cheap Skull Candy headphones that also make me feel like a little boy because of the color, they also drive me nuts cause they aren't comfortable at all.

You can follow Brent on his twitter account: @Gnarnia88 and if you see him in real life, give him a hug or exchange daps.

Anime In a Theater

If there's one thing I'm glad that Saskatoon is doing, it's that they bring anime
movies to the theater.

Today I went to go see Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos at Galaxy. Good movie but all it did was make me wanna watch FMA: Brotherhood again (which I will be doing shortly).

Prior to the FMA movie, they had brought a few of the Bleach and Naruto movies to Galaxy and you know what? They're a good time, it's as popcorn movie as a movie can get.

If you're into anime these are worth checking out, because let's face it, we all owe these production companies some money for all the "obtaining" and streaming we do when we watch anime.

And if you think it's dumb and a waste of time and money, then that's like, your opinion man.

I definitely will be going to more of these movies. Something to do right?

We created a resume or application guideline for those who wanted to blog with us. It is on our separate page. The items listed on that page are currently what we are interested in. There would also be some sort of meet up to be scheduled before being added as an author. Its nothing formal, just a way for us to get to know one another.

Our aim is to have a diverse set of people with different interests and skill sets. This way we can each offer different perspectives and writing material. We would like for hello saskatoon to be able to interest the entire population.

Just a Taste: Minh's Garden

Minh's Garden is a Vietnamese, Chinese and Thai restaurant that has been open for about a month. It is located in the North end on 51st street. Like majority of Asian restaurants, the interior design is not modern but don't let that disappoint you. Service is good, including the family owners and hired staff.

Since it was my father and I again we went with our traditional salad rolls (fresh rolls or cold rolls or whatever you would like to call them) and vermicelli dishes. Here they had the four different types of salad rolls and many different combinations of vermicelli dishes.

The grilled pork rolls were great, the best I have had in the city I would think. My dad liked them a lot too, but he was saying he wished they had a pork meatball option. The sauce was thicker (the way I like it..) and complimented the nicely wrapped rolls.

We each ordered the vermicelli with spring rolls, rice shredded pork and grilled pork ($8.50). My father was impressed with the way it was presented (but once again wished there was a pork meatball option). It was delicious. I would say it was unique because of the use of the rice shredded pork, it added a nice texture to the noodles. Grilled pork is always tender making it my favourite choice for all Vietnamese restaurants. It was a large portion too, many restaurants disappoint me with small dishes.

If you enjoy Asian dishes and want to try a new place, Minh's Garden is a good option.

It is great to see Messi win this award once again. But really, were you surprised? We have been talking about him a lot lately.  Messi looks like your average guy (short and almost a bit pudgy), but this man is a God on the pitch. I admire his mental strength and his creativity. Not often you can find a player in professional leagues that can win games as an individual.

BRIT Happens: Day Three Recap!

Bedford Alumni that braved the early morning to support their Redmen in the 8am game! That's serious dedication! BRIT > Sleep, enough said!

This recap comes a little late because I spent most of my day recovering from the notorious "BRIT hang over."

Morning started off bright and early with the 8:00am Red Eye Opener, followed by a couple more games of the latter place games. At noon the BRIT Cheerleading/Pom competition began, with the home team Bedford Road taking first in the Cheerleading competition and Centennial winning the Pom competition. Congrats to both teams!

The consolation prize for the basketball side of things went to Riffle from Regina. Fan favorites Garden City Gophers topped Paul Kane to take home third place. Their second third-place finish at BRIT, the last time was when BRIT-Legend Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson (better known as Okababy-Jackson) played for the Gophers in 2008. #2 Jayel Masangkay of Garden City earned himself a spot on the BRIT all-star team with his speed and tenacity on the court. It doesn't hurt that he isn't shy about doing back flips to entertain the crowd either!

The Finals featured Scots College from Australia taking on the defending Champions St. George from BC. The stands was packed and the fans were split basically down the middle: females cheered for the Aussies (for obvious reasons) and males cheered for St. George (out of jealousy). #7 Patrick Emery of Scots College stole the show, hitting eight three-pointers, carrying his team to the win and the earning himself BRIT MVP honors. Congrats to the Scots College Lions their first ever BRIT championship!

The Finals also featured another brilliant performance, this one from the mysterious 'Red Man'. Red Man pulled out the Michael Jackson costume and dance moves, the cowboy outfit, the hockey player outfit, and trolled the whole gym by leading us all to believe he was going to reveal his identity, only to have another red suit under... still mad about that one!

Red Man's props and costumes he used during BRIT. Crazy thing is this is about 1/4 of the props he had in the locker room. (Yes, that is a fake snake)

That marks the end of another BRIT tournament. If you were apart of BRIT this year, I'm sure you had a good time. For those that didn't get a chance to come out, the good thing is there is always next year! See you all at the 45th BRIT Classic!

Stay classy Saskatoon,

My First Cookbook

I enjoy food so much I needed to buy a simple cookbook for myself. I love to eat but have never learned how to cook in the past. I am not a very hands on person and at times can be quite lazy. Rather than making frozen meals that can be cooked in the oven I have decided to try and be more interactive and have fun with cooking.

My aunt was over for the holidays and some of her hobbies include baking and cooking. Every evening we had something different such as spicy black bean chicken, Thai curry and carbonara. She has inspired me to prepare some meals on my own. I went to McNally Robinson to grab myself this book, Aashna picked it out for me. It's small, simple and has delicious looking photos. Many recipes have jumped out at me as I skim the pages such as Vietnamese beef pho, hummus, poached eggs and bacon english muffins and Hawaiian vodka.

I may just show you some of the foods I create.

BRIT happens: Day two recap

Friday night at BRIT means the stands are a little more packed and the games become just that much more intense!

The BRITmas festivities started off with a breakfast for players and coaches, which I was honored to be a part of. Followed by a pep rally featuring team introduction, pom/cheer performances, and a dunk competition. Emmanuel Joshua from Notre Dame, AB came out on top with a 360 dunk in the finals! The picture above is a shot I took during the pep rally (phone camera quality, sorry).

The games today saw Australia's Scot College top tournament-favorites Pitt Meadows, 51-47. I don't see who can stop the boys from Down Under now that Pitt Meadows isn't in contention. Maybe the other BC team, St. George can give them a run for their money! The final game was another packed house with Holy Cross going up against Notre Dame from Alberta. The game was intense as fans of their respective side were going at each other all game! Notre Dame came out on top, 49-44!

One of the best things about BRIT has got to be this mystery man here:

'Red' Man puts on a show every night, putting on different costumes and using a variety of props to entertain the crowd during time outs. The acts he puts on are always unique and never seem to get old. The suggestive dancing with the refs and random people in the crowd always get me!

Having the privilege of coaching the home team Bedford Road Redmen this year is an absolute honor. It also comes with some perks, a fridge full of soda pops, only for coaches and volunteers!

Shout out to my Bedford boys who played a scrappy game against Walter Murray today. We came up short, but it was a good effort. Coming up short also means we get to play the classic Red-Eye-Opener at 8:00am tomorrow morning. With that, I say sweet dreams and goodnight!

Stay classy Saskatoon,
Jason Tran
